I recently discovered that growing bamboo makes a good privacy fence.  It grows fast and densely.  I saw pictures of a 5" starter stalk of bamboo that grew to 22 FEET in 18 DAYS.  Some grow as much as 3 feet in one day.  There are about 1200 varieties of bamboo.  It bushes out like a tree.  It can grow out of control, but you can contain it by putting a barrier 12-18" deep like an underground solid fence, because it grows close to the surface.  The road is a suitable barrier as well.
